NGC2146
NGC2146 is a heavily perturbed galaxy, sometimes referred to as the "Dusty Hand" from optical observations, positioned in the direction of the Constellation Camelopardalis at an approximate distance of 47 Million Light-Years. It is a peculiar galaxy, a strong radio source, and is possibly interacting with the NGC2146A, 18 arc-minutes away. It is also classified as a starburst galaxy with prolific generation of new blue stars, giving the galaxy a distinct blue appearance, with a star forming rate about twice that of M82. It is emmersed in an extended HII structure indicating a possible strong tidal interaction with a former companion, most likely destroyed in a merger. Optical data suggests the presence of a strong, starburst driven superwind. Along the right quadrant of the galaxy just below the 3 o'clock position are two distinct features, one a bubble, possibly generated by a superwind, and two, a bright bar, possibly resulting from some sort of outflow from the turbulent core region. |
