Z Canis Majoris

Z Canis Majoris

A friend and amateur astronomer, Jimi Lowrey, asked me to image the young star Z Canis Majoris, which seems to have a brightened outburst or mass accretion infall. The star is located at RA 07 03 43.16, DEC -11 33 06, and is a mag. 9.85 star, also reported with a companion infrared star. It has a reported distance of 3,750 ly and a further designation of SAO 152302. I found that via AMASTRO mailing list, amateur Jerry Lodriguss has flagged a possible brightening within a jet associated with the variable star Z Canis Majoris close to the small cluster VdBergh 92 and embedded in the extended nebula IC2177. A very faint arc can be seen extending from the obvious bright streamer upward toward the top of the image and slightly to the right of Z Canis Majoris. Anyway, I thought it may be of some interest.
