Stephan's Quintet

Stephan's Quintet

DETAILS: Imaged 10-04 & 10-05-05 with the 12.5" Truss RC on a Paramount ME Robotic Mount using an ST-10XME with Tru-Balance filters at f6.8. Three hours of Luminance combined with one hour each of RGB using CCDSoft, MaxIm DL, Photoshop PS, RegiStar and several plugins.

COMMENTARY: Stephan's Quintet is a virtual train wreck of galaxies, gravitationally interacting with one another at an approximate distance of 250 million light-years. It is a very compact group consisting of NGC 7317, 7318 A & B, 7319, and 7320. NGC7320 seems however to be a foreground galaxy at a lesser distance. Two other faint galaxies can be seen to the left side of the Stephan's Quintet grouping of 5 galaxies, one of which is in the lower left corner of the image.
